April Class of the Month: Wizarding Wildlife 101: - DONE

April 1 - April 30

That's not your mum's cat in the forest. Be prepared! Here at Hogwarts, students are taught basic characteristics and behaviors of all Magical Creatures. Come learn about these amazing animals, from the common to the extremely rare.
NOTE: Hogwarts is not responsible for severed limbs.

#1) The Hippogriff
A Hippogriff is a magical creature that has the front legs, wings, the head of a giant eagle and the body, hind legs and tail of a horse. It is very similar to another mythical creature, the Griffin, with the horse rear replacing the lion rear. Hippogriffs have cruel, steel-coloured beaks and large, brilliantly orange eyes. The talons on their front legs are half a foot long and appear deadly. They are a very proud creature and require observance of a specific treating ritual. Pick one of the following tasks:

❖ Pick a book with a member of royalty; King, Queen, Prince or Princess. This can be any genre. (For example: Prince of Werewolf Clan, Fae Queen, King Henry V, Queen Mary, etc. )
❖ Read a book shelved Historical Fiction.
❖ Read a book featuring a dragon.

#2) Thestrals:
A breed of winged horses with a skeletal body, face with reptilian features, and wide, leathery wings that resemble a bat's. They are very rare, and are considered dangerous by the Ministry of Magic. Thestrals are, undeservedly, known as omens of misfortune and aggression by many wizards because they are visible only to those who have witnessed death at least once (and fully accepted the concept) or due to their somewhat grim, gaunt and ghostly appearance. Pick one of the following tasks:

❖ Read a book with a ghost in the story.
❖ Read a book with a "spooky" cover. (Tombstones, skeletons, scary night scene, etc.)
❖ Read a book shelved as "Paranormal" on the main page genre.

#3) Hedwig (Harry's Snowy Owl):
Hedwig was gifted to Harry from Rubeus Hagrid on his eleventh birthday. Owls are primarily used by wizards to deliver mail, but Hedwig also became an important companion to Harry. Pick one of the following tasks:

❖ Read a book that features 2 or more friends.
❖ Read a book that features something that flies on the cover. (Bird, plane, helicopter, etc.)
Louisiana Longshot by Jana Deleon (butterfly on cover)
❖ Read a book that shelved as "Travel" on the main page genre.

#4) The Chimaera
A vicious, bloodthirsty creature with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a dragon's tail. Because of their ferocity, Chimaeras are classified as very dangerous. There is only one recorded instance of a wizard killing a Chimaera, although the victory was soured when the wizard fell from his winged horse. Pick one of the following tasks:

❖ Read a book featuring a serial killer, stalker, or where some type of murder has taken place.
❖ Read a book with blood on the cover.
❖ Read a book shelved as Crime or Thriller, on the main page genre.
Roseanna by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö

#5) Sphinx:
A magical creature native to Egypt. It has the head of human, and the body of lion. Sphinxes are capable of human speech, and are known for their love of puzzles, riddles, and enigmas. Used for centuries to guard treasures, they are known to become violent when something threatens that treasure. Pick one of the following tasks:

❖ Read a book featuring a bodyguard, or where someone is in the witness protection program
❖ Read a book with the word "Riddle" in the title or series name.
❖ Read a book with "treasure" on the cover. Such as: jewelry, loose jewel stones, gold, coins, cash, etc

Ovenpå er der Stille by Gerbrand Bakker

When Henk’s twin brother dies in a car accident, Helmer is obliged to return to the small family farm. He resigns himself to taking over his brother’s role and spending the rest of his days ‘with his head under a cow’.
After his old, worn-out father has been transferred upstairs, Helmer sets about furnishing the rest of the house according to his own minimal preferences. ‘A double bed and a duvet’, advises Ada, who lives next door, with a sly look. Then Riet appears, the woman once engaged to marry his twin. Could Riet and her son live with him for a while, on the farm?
The Twin is an ode to the platteland, the flat and bleak Dutch countryside with its ditches and its cows and its endless grey skies. Ostensibly a novel about the countryside, as seen through the eyes of a farmer, The Twin is, in the end, about the possibility or impossibility of taking life into one’s own hands. It chronicles a way of life which has resisted modernity, is culturally apart, and yet riven with a kind of romantic longing.
From Goodreads.

This was a rather depressing story. Helmer basically hates his life but has done nothing to change it. He felt a huge loss when he first lost his twin brother to a girl and shortly after lost him completely when he died. The whole book is depressing but in some weird way it is quite interesting too.

Witch Hunt by S.M. Reine

A brutal murder.
There are scratches on Cèsar Hawke’s arms, a discharged Glock on his coffee table, and a dead woman in his bathtub. Yeah, maybe he brought the waitress home for some fun — he was too drunk to remember it — but he knows for a fact that he didn’t kill her. He’s an agent with the Office of Preternatural Affairs. He doesn’t hurt people. He saves them.
The cops disagree. Now Cèsar is running.
The search for a shaman.
Isobel Stonecrow speaks with the dead…for the right price. She brings closure to the bereaved and heals broken hearts. But when she resurrects someone for the wrong client, she ends up on the OPA’s most wanted list.
One risky solution.
Tracking down Isobel is the last case assigned to Cèsar before he bolts. If he finds her, he can prove that he didn’t kill that waitress. He can clear his name, get his job back, and bring justice to the victim.
She’s just one witch. Cèsar has bagged a dozen witches before.
How hard can one more be?
From Goodreads.

I liked this, I liked that I did not know who the bad guys were till quite late. Cèsar Hawke runs fom the law, which means his own colleagues, to prove his innocence. But as soon as he finds out he actually did kill somebody he turns himself in, to his boss. Not everything is as it seem and when both demons, necromancer, witches and other paranormal creatures are involved it is not easy to find the culprits.

Hollywood Assassin by M.Z. Kelly

Things could be worse for LAPD Detective Kate Sexton. Okay, so her ex-husband cheated on her and the DVD of his indiscretions made the rounds of the entire department, she’s broke and living above an appliance store with her canine partner Bernie who is a sexual predator, her British friend Natalie has a vocabulary that would make Howard Stern blush, and her mother is hallucinating about having sex with a dead president.
But things could be worse . . . like Kate could be stalked by a sadistic serial killer while she tries to solve a thirty year-old murder and save the life and reputation of a cop wanted for the crime. Come to think of it, maybe things couldn’t get any worse because this is Kate’s life.
Can Kate Sexton elude the killer, solve the cold case, keep Bernie's sexual wanderlust in check, keep her best friend under control, save a cop from death row, and find love again? Only time, loads of trouble, and tons of laughs will tell. Hollywood Assassin has more twists and turns than a car chase on Sunset Strip with a Hollywood starlet at the wheel.
From Goodreads.

This was okay. There were interesting bits in it and there were also funny episodes but there was also too much violence and people getting away with crime for thirty years. Though this was okay it did not make me want to continue the series.

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

A SACRED OATH
A FALLEN ANGEL
A FORBIDDEN LOVE

Romance was not part of Nora Grey's plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.
But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life.
From Goodreads.

I didn't like this book much. I don't understand why the male protagonist has to be a horrible, arrogant jerk and then end up being the extreme good guy. None of the characters in this book were the least bit interesting. There is no way I will continue this series.

Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon 2015 - Finished

Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon 2014 hosted by Michelle @ the true book addict.

I really meant to do an update during the week but never got around to it. My goal was to read at least 7 books but I would have liked to read 10.
I reached my goal and read 8 books as there were a couple of days where I basically read nothing. I read 4 of these books during Dewey's Read-a-Thon. And I read one Sunday evening after the Read-a-Thon.

As usual I have enjoyed taking part in this Read-a-Thon and I will hopefully be able to take part in the High Summer Read-a-Thon but it often falls while I am away on holiday.
Thank you Michelle for hosting.

List of books:
  1. The Man in the Crowd by M. Sydnor Jr.
  2. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
  3. A Little Love by Amanda Prowse
  4. THE TEA SHOP: Cakes, Ice Cream & Afternoon Tea by De-ann Black
  5. The One Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson
  6. The Woman In Black by Susan Hill
  7. Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs
  8. The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss

The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss

The Slow Regard of Silent Things is set at The University, where the brightest minds work to unravel the mysteries of enlightened sciences, such as artificing and alchemy. Auri, a former student (and a secondary but influential character from Rothfuss’s earlier novels) now lives alone beneath the sprawling campus in a maze of ancient and abandoned passageways. There in The Underthing, she feels her powers and learns to see the truths that science—and her former classmates—have overlooked. From Goodreads.

This was nothing like I expected. I at least thought I would find out a bit more about where Auri was from or maybe even how long she had been living beneath the University. You get no such answers from this book.
It is a weird but interesting tale of how Auri sees the world. Everything has it's place and its own name and things will be unhappy if they are not in their place.
The title is very accurate description of this book.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015 - Finished

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015.

I didn't update as much as I usually do but even though I slept for about 2½ hours I managed to read 1032 pages in total which is only 31 pages less than last year. I guess this means that a wee sleep during the read-a-thon actually is good and I also feel much more awake right now than I usually have done at the end of a read-a-thon.

If in anyway possible I will take part in the next read-a-thon in October 2015.

List of books read:
  1. THE TEA SHOP: Cakes, Ice Cream & Afternoon Tea by De-ann Black
  2. The One Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson
  3. The Woman In Black by Susan Hill
  4. Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015 - End of Event Meme

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015.

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you?  I had some problems staying awake around hour 12 but that was easy fixed by sleeping a couple of hours. It was a bit hard waking up though.
  2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?  If interested in paranormal books then Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs is good but it would be advisable to read the 3 other books in the series first.
  3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? No, as usual you have done a brilliant job.
  4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? I like both the pre Dewey's post and the early start of meme post that you started last year.
  5. How many books did you read? I finished 4 books.
  6. What were the names of the books you read? The Tea Shop: Cakes, Ice Cream & Afternoon Tea by De-ann Black, The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson, The Woman in Black by Susan Hill and Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs
  7. Which book did you enjoy most? Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs
  8. Which did you enjoy least? The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson
  9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? N/A
  10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? If in any way possible I will definitely take part in the next Read-a-Thon again. I will be a reader

Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs

The Alpha and Omega novels transport readers into the realm of the werewolf, where Charles Cornick and Anna Latham embody opposite sides of the shifter personality. Now, a pleasure trip drops the couple into the middle of some bad supernatural business...
For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not travelling because of Charles's role as his father's enforcer. This time, their trip to Arizona is purely personal - or at least it starts out that way . . .
Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae's cold war with humanity is about to heat up - and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.
From Goodreads.

Good to be back in Mercy's world. This is the fourth book in the Alpha & Omega series about Anna and Charles and these books can't be read out of order.
Again Anna shows the strength an Omega wolf possesses and Charles shows he will do everything to protect Anna and all other wolves including their families, even if they are not in his own pack.

The Woman In Black by Susan Hill

Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor in London, is summoned to Crythin Gifford to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, and to sort through her papers before returning to London. It is here that Kipps first sees the woman in black and begins to gain an impression of the mystery surrounding her. From the funeral he travels to Eel Marsh House and sees the woman again; he also hears the terrifying sounds on the marsh.
Despite Kipps’s experiences he resolves to spend the night at the house and fulfil his professional duty. It is this night at Eel Marsh House that contains the greatest horror for Kipps. Kipps later discovers the reasons behind the hauntings at Eel Marsh House. The book ends with the woman in black exacting a final, terrible revenge.

Another Horror book that I didn't find particularly scary. At least it was slightly scarier than The Haunting of Hill House and I felt sorry for Arthur that the ghost followed him.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015 - Mid-Event Survey:

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015.

It has now been nearly 12 hours and time for the Mid-Event Survey.

1. What are you reading right now?
I have just started The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

2. How many books have you read so far?
I have finished 2 books, in total 535 pages.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs if I even get to it.

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
I am lucky as I have had no interruptions.

5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
This being my 8th read-a-thon nothing really surprises me but at the same time I won a prize in hour 12 and that is great when we are so many taking part.

The One Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

After a long and eventful life Allan Karlsson is moved to a nursing home to await the inevitable. But his health refuses to fail and as his 100th birthday looms a huge party is planned. Allan wants no part of it and decides to climb out the window... Charming and funny; a European publishing phenomenon.
Sitting quietly in his room in an old people's home, Allan Karlsson is waiting for a party he doesn't want to begin. His one-hundredth birthday party to be precise. The Mayor will be there. The press will be there. But, as it turns out, Allan will not . . .
Escaping (in his slippers) through his bedroom window, into the flowerbed, Allan makes his getaway. And so begins his picaresque and unlikely journey involving a suitcase full of cash, a few thugs, a very friendly hot-dog stand operator, a few deaths, an elephant and incompetent police. As his escapades unfold, Allan's earlier life is revealed. A life in which - remarkably - he played a key role behind the scenes in some of the momentous events of the twentieth century.
From Goodreads.

I wasn't wild about this book. The part in present day was okay and interesting though it at times was a bit too unrealistic and fantastical. I didn't like the historical part about Allan meeting all these different Heads of States and making himself invaluable to them, it seemed a bit too easy for him to get near them. A bit too political for me.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015 - Update 1

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015.

10 hours in and it is time for an update. I have finished 2 books, in total 535 pages

First: The Tea Shop: Cakes, Ice Cream & Afternoon Tea by De-ann Black (139 pages) which was exactly as expected. A light, cosy, easy to read romance set in a Scottish seaside town.

second: The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson (396 pages) I liked the part of this book set in present time starting with Allan climbing out of the window. I did not like the whole looking back in time and all the politics in that part.

I have decided that I want to have a few hours sleep this time and actually thought it might be around now as it is just after midnight. But as I am not tired yet even though I have been awake for 16 hours I will just continue reading.

THE TEA SHOP: Cakes, Ice Cream & Afternoon Tea by De-ann Black

Jayne's job is to find suitable pop-up shops for businesses looking for temporary premises on the beautiful West Coast of Scotland.
Rich and handsome Brodan McBride, a master baker, becomes one of her new clients and opens a pop-up tea shop selling cakes, ice cream and afternoon tea in one of the busy seaside towns. She also meets Fergus, a gorgeous bespoke tailor who makes Brodan's expensive suits. Jayne's friend and hairdresser, Ceard, isn't sure that she should become romantically involved with either of them.
Although Jayne is attracted to Brodan, is he the man for her? Or is Fergus and his well-cut suits a better fit? Then again, has she been friends with the man who was meant for her all along?
In the busy seaside town, with its lovely little tea shop, gossip, cakes and ice cream, there's only one thing for sure -- Brodan McBride grinds his own nuts.
From Goodreads.

Another short, cute romance from De-ann Black. I seem to be returning to her books at the moment when I need something easy, very light and fluffy to read and I like that her books are set in Scotland.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015 - Opening Meme

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015.

There is about half an hour to the start. I have had lunch and I know which book to start with. This is the second time the opening Meme is up early and I am a big fan of that.

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? I am reading from Øster Snede, a small village in Denmark. Joined by my twin-sister and later tonight when he gets off work my husband will also join us..

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? My sister has prepared dinner for us, which is great as I hate to cook. Then we also have enough sweets to be on a sugar high the whole 24 hours.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I go on canoeing trips and love bringing my kindle. I also go for walks which is the only time I listen to audiobooks.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? This is my 8th RaT and I have decided that this year I want to sleep for a few hours during the read-a-thon instead of staying awake the whole 24 hours.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon April 2015 is only a few hours away. It is a bit hard that it doesn't start till 2pm my time as I have been awake for 6 hours already.

Usually one of my goals has been to stay awake the whole 24 hours but I have decided that this time I will sleep 3-4 hours during the read-a-thon. I hope to read about 750 pages in total maybe more as some of my books are quite easy to read.

As usual I have a long list of books to chose from and this time I think I will stick to my list as I need these books for a lot of other reading challenges I am taking part in.

List of books to read:
  1. A Bag Of Moonshine by Alan Garner (144 pages)
  2. Cows by Matthew Stokoe (194 pages)
  3. The Tea Shop: Cakes, Ice Cream & Afternoon Tea by De-ann Black (139 pages)
  4. The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson (396 pages)
  5. The Woman in Black by Susan Hill (208 pages)
  6. Ovenpå er der Stille by Gerbrand Bakker (original title Boven is het stil/ English title The Twin) (275 pages)
  7. Who, What, Where, When, Die by Amanda M. Lee (199 pages)
  8. Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs (336 pages)
  9. The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss (159 pages)

A Little Love by Amanda Prowse

Everybody needs a little love in their lives...
Pru Plum is the celebrated owner of a famous Mayfair bakery. She wears Chanel and her hair is expensively cut. Few would believe that this elegant woman turned sixty-six last year.
But Pru is not the confident, successful businesswoman she appears. She has done shameful things to get to where she is today. And she will do anything to protect the secrets of her past - especially when, for the first time in her life, she has finally fallen in love...
From bestselling author Amanda Prowse, this is a story about love, loss and lies - and finding happiness before it's too late. From Goodreads.

This was good and it was quite enjoyable that the MC was in her sixties. This also meant she had a past and that comes back to haunt her when she finds the love of her life. Pru and her cousin Milly has done what they needed in their youth to get to where they are now.

A Million More Pages - Hogwarts: Who is ... The Death Eater? - Finished

Who is ... The Death Eater? hosted by A Million More Pages on Goodreads.

I managed to stay in the game till the final and I also guessed right but unfortunately later than the other finalist. I still earned 10 points for reaching the final.

Who is ... The Death Eater?
February 1 - ?
*Each round is 2 weeks. How many rounds will be determined by how many people are on a team*

*Inspired by the TV show "The Mole"

Death Eater /deTH 'ēder/: (noun); a wizard or witch, led by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, who seek to purify the Wizarding community by eliminating the Muggle-borns and half-bloods.

Participants will be randomly placed into teams. The goal of the team is to earn House Points for the pot. Every few days, a new task will be posted. Each round will last 2 weeks. Within those 2 weeks, players may read as many books that fit the tasks as they can. Each book finished will earn the team points. However, there is one player whose job is to keep points OUT of the pot. That player is the Death Eater. The Death Eater will be chosen by the Moderators and sent a PM with further instructions.

At the end of the round (every 2 weeks) a Quiz will be posted on the team's thread. The Quiz will ask questions about the identity of the Death Eater. Complete the Quiz and PM it to the Mod in charge of your game. The player who knows the least about the Death Eater, the player who answers the fewest questions correctly, will be eliminated from the game. If the Quiz ends in a tie, the player who returned their Quiz last will be eliminated. The Death Eater will never be eliminated because s/he will know all the answers.

The final round will consist of the Death Eater and the last 2 remaining players. At that time, a final round and quiz will be held. The winner and The Death Eater will be announced after the Final Quiz.

The Final Quiz will consist of questions that may or may not date back to the very beginning of the game.

The winner of the game is the person who correctly identifies the Death Eater the final week. That player will earn their House all the points from the pot. If no player can identify the Death Eater, the Death Eater wins the game and earns the points.

Points:
-Each player gets 3 participation points (except the winner of the pot)
-The last player standing, the one who ID’s the Death Eater the final round, gets the points in the pot
-If no one ID’s the Death Eater in the final round, the Death Eater gets the points
*Points may be deducted from the pot for breaking a rule, reading a book that does not fit the task, or by not posting a finished book on time.

Rules:
*Post your House name when you sign up
*Books must be at least 125 pages in length (140 for YA)
*Re-reads are allowed
*Fan Fiction and Beta book are NOT allowed
*No Manga, Comic Books, or Graphic Novels will be allowed
*You must post a link to the book, the author, date finished, and your rating for each book read
*If the task calls for an item on the cover, you must post the cover
*If it is not obvious, you must explain how your book fits the task
*Books must be finished within each two week round
*You cannot speak to other players about how you voted on the Quiz
*Quizes must be PM'd to the Mod in charge of your game by the stated deadline

The woman behind Barbie was Ruth Handler. Barbie’s appearance was modeled on a doll named Lilli, based on a German comic strip character. Originally marketed as a racy gag gift to adult men in tobacco shops, the Lilli doll later became extremely popular with children. Mattel bought the rights to Lilli and made its own version, which Handler named after her daughter, Barbara.
Over the years, Barbie generated huge sales–and a lot of controversy. On the positive side, many women saw Barbie as providing an alternative to traditional 1950s gender roles. She has had a series of different jobs, from airline stewardess, doctor, pilot and astronaut to Olympic athlete and even U.S. presidential candidate. Others thought Barbie’s never-ending supply of designer outfits, cars and “Dream Houses” encouraged kids to be materialistic. It was Barbie’s appearance that caused the most controversy, however. Her tiny waist and enormous breasts–it was estimated that if she were a real woman, her measurements would be 36-18-38–led many to claim that Barbie provided little girls with an unrealistic and harmful example and fostered negative body image.
Despite the criticism, sales of Barbie-related merchandise continued to soar, topping 1 billion dollars annually by 1993. Since 1959, more than 800 million dolls in the Barbie family have been sold around the world and Barbie is now a bona fide global icon.
